WHEN SHOULD I CALL TO SCHEDULE MY NEWBORN SESSION?
Before your baby is born! It is so important to plan ahead. Capturing your newborn within the first two weeks of life, while they are still sleepy and curled up, can make all the difference in your newborn portraits. Since we never really know when your little one will arrive, I will pencil you in on my calendar to hold a spot for you. When your baby is born I will move your appointment accordingly. If your baby came early or if your baby is already born, don’t panic! I always do my best to squeeze newborns into the schedule and older babies take beautiful portraits too.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH MY NEWBORN?
Newborns are best photographed within the first 2 weeks (ideally 7-10 days) of life, when they are still sleepy. However, beautiful images can be achieved with babies who are slightly older, so not to worry! I take up to two hours for a newborn session and leave plenty of time for feedings, diaper changes and breaks for mommy and baby.
WHAT SHOULD BABY WEAR?
I will provide specially made clothing and/or wraps for your session. Clothing that is too big or busy can overwhelm your newborn in the images. I love to photograph newborns swaddled in blankets with lots of texture and snuggled up tight in parent's hands. I have a collection of newborn hats, wraps, bows and headbands that coordinate beautifully with my blankets and props.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY NEWBORN SESSION?
Relax! Newborn sessions are all about going with the flow. I will have a plan for the session and it will evolve with your newborn's needs during the session. Most importantly, do your best to keep your baby content and remain calm. I am prepared for when we need to take a break or try something different. For in-home sessions, I would also suggest to clear any clutter and have beds made in rooms we may go into.
WHAT IF I DON'T FEEL MY HOME IS PHOTOGENIC?
If you've chosen an in-home session, I usually photograph in the nursery, living area, and master bedroom. If I see a good opportunity elsewhere, we explore it. I also try to get outside whenever the conditions are right. It will be very easy for me to identify the best lighting opportunities in your home. If your home is very small, dark or cluttered, you may want to consider a studio session.
CAN I BE PHOTOGRAPHED WITH MY BABY?
Absolutely! I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love to capture the emotion of those special first days with your new little one. I ask parents to wear a neutral colored solid shirt so that they may serve as a backdrop for baby for some of the images.
CAN SIBLINGS BE PHOTOGRAPHED WITH MY BABY?
Yes, siblings are encouraged to be photographed with the baby! I usually do the sibling images first, when their attention is peaked. When working with toddlers, sometimes it's best to let them, take breaks and kind of come and go from being in pictures. I prefer to let them naturally interact with the baby. Not only does this help the mood of the session stay relaxed, but it also creates beautiful, genuine moments that I can capture.
MUCH DOES A NEWBORN SESSION COST?
The Newborn Session Fee is $200 (+50 for a studio setting) which includes a pre-session consultation, the newborn session, post processing and editing of your images, and an online gallery. Prints, products and digital images are purchased separately.
