When to Take Newborn Photos: A Guide for Expectant Parents in Montgomery, TX

One of the most common questions I hear from expectant parents is, “When should we schedule our newborn photos?”

The answer is a little more flexible than you might think! While there is a popular window for newborn photography, there isn't one magical day when your baby will be perfectly sleepy, or ready for pictures. Every baby is different, and some of the most meaningful photographs happen when we simply slow down and let your baby be a baby.

If you're expecting a little one in Montgomery or Conroe area, here's what you need to know about timing your newborn photography session.

When is the best time to take newborn photos?

For parents who love those classic, sleepy newborn portraits, I generally recommend planning your session for the first two weeks after birth.

During this time, many newborns still spend a good portion of the day sleeping, and they may naturally settle into some of those curled-up positions that make newborn photography so special. Their features are still wonderfully tiny, and we can capture all those little details that change so quickly in the first few weeks.

That said, every baby develops at their own pace. Some newborns are very sleepy, while others are wide-eyed and curious from the beginning. Neither is better than the other! My approach is to work with your baby's individual needs and personality rather than expect every baby to behave the same way.

The first two weeks are a popular window, not a deadline. If your baby is already a few weeks old, you've absolutely not missed your chance for beautiful photographs.

When should I book my newborn photography session?

I recommend reaching out during your second trimester or early in your third trimester to reserve your newborn session but I try to take as many last minute appointments as I can.

Booking during pregnancy allows us to plan ahead without adding another decision to your plate after the baby arrives. We'll use your due date to estimate your session timing, then finalize the actual date once your little one makes their appearance.

Because babies don't always follow the calendar, I build flexibility into the process. If your baby arrives early or decides to take their time, we'll adjust accordingly.

What if my baby arrives early or late?

This is one of the reasons I don't recommend waiting until after delivery to start looking for a newborn photographer.

Your due date gives us a starting point, but your baby's actual arrival determines the timing of your session. If your little one arrives a week early, we adjust. If they arrive after their due date, we adjust for that, too.

And if your baby needs extra time in the hospital or your family needs a little longer to recover, that comes first.

Your newborn session should be something you look forward to, not another source of stress during an already life-changing season. We'll work together to find a time that makes sense for your family.

What if my baby is already three, four, or six weeks old?

Please don't assume you've missed your opportunity!

While the first two weeks are often preferred for traditional, sleepy newborn portraits, beautiful newborn photography can happen well beyond that window.

As babies get older, they may spend more time awake, stretch out more, and become increasingly interested in the world around them. That can change the feel of your photographs, but it doesn't make them any less meaningful.

Instead of trying to recreate photographs that are typically taken with much younger newborns, I focus on the baby in front of me. We can capture tiny fingers and toes, sweet expressions, little stretches, and those beautiful moments of connection between you and your baby.

If your baby is a little older than you originally planned, let's talk about what you're hoping for. We can decide together what approach will work best.

What if my baby has flaky skin, baby acne, or other newborn blemishes?

First, take a breath. Newborn skin changes are incredibly common.

Peeling skin, tiny bumps, and baby acne can all appear during the first few weeks as your baby's skin adjusts after birth. These changes are normal for many babies, and they don't mean your photographs won't be beautiful.

I know it's easy to compare your baby to the perfectly smooth, sleepy newborn portraits you see online. But those images don't tell the whole story of what newborn skin looks like in real life.

My priority is to photograph your baby beautifully while keeping their comfort and safety at the forefront. We can also discuss appropriate editing for temporary skin blemishes when needed.

You don't need to wait for your baby to look a certain way before documenting this season. You deserve photographs of the baby you have right now.

Should I wait until we're settled at home?

The first few weeks with a newborn can be a blur of feedings, visitors, sleepless nights, and figuring out your new routine. It's completely understandable to want to wait until life feels a little more settled.

The challenge is that those first weeks pass quickly, and finding a photographer at the last minute can be difficult but Arrowhead Photo can help!

Planning your session during pregnancy means you don't have to figure everything out while recovering from delivery and caring for a newborn. You can ask questions, discuss your preferences, and know that one important detail is already taken care of.

And remember, you don't have to have everything figured out before your session. You don't need to arrive with a perfectly packed diaper bag, a baby who follows a schedule, or a detailed plan for every photograph. That's what I'm here to help with.

What should I do to prepare for newborn photos?

Once your session is scheduled, I'll help you understand what to expect and how to prepare.

In general, I recommend keeping things simple:

  • Feed your baby as needed. A full, comfortable baby may settle more easily, but we always follow your baby's cues rather than trying to force a feeding schedule.

  • Bring the essentials. Diapers, wipes, feeding supplies, and a change of clothes are usually all you'll need.

  • Keep your expectations flexible. We may need to pause for feeding, soothing, changing, or cuddling. That's a normal part of newborn photography.

  • Don't worry about perfection. Your baby doesn't need perfect skin, a predictable schedule, or a particular temperament to be photographed beautifully.

Most importantly, give yourself permission to enjoy the experience. These photographs are about preserving a fleeting season of your family's life, not creating a perfect performance.

Those first weeks with your baby are filled with details you may not realize you'll miss until they're gone: the way their whole body fits against your chest, their impossibly tiny fingers, the little stretches, and the way they curl into you when they're sleepy.

At Arrowhead Photo, I approach newborn photography with patience, experience, and a baby-led philosophy. Rather than forcing every baby into the same poses, I pay attention to your baby's cues and work with their comfort, needs, and natural movements throughout the session.

My goal is to create beautiful, meaningful photographs while making the experience feel calm and welcoming for your family.
